The Best Children’s Bedroom Blinds

When it comes to picking out the best children’s bedroom blinds, there are two questions that you tend to ask: how efficient are they at blocking out light, and how safe are they?

If your child is a light sleeper, then you know that you need some serious blackout blinds that are going to keep them asleep for as long as possible. And with younger children, you want to be sure that everything installed in that room is safe and not going to cause any potential hazards.

Safety and light control is very important, but what if you want more than just practicality? Luckily there are a huge amount of blinds that offer so much more than that.

What Do You Want From Your Children’s Bedroom Blinds?

When picking your children’s bedroom blinds, you should consider what it is that you need for their room.

As already mentioned, you’ll likely want to block out excess light to aid a good night’s sleep. Privacy is most likely very important too. But by far, the most important thing that you should consider is that they are child safe.

Safe Blinds

The good news is that any blinds that have been produced post-February 2014 have to adhere to strict Child Safety Regulations. It is the responsibility of the blind supplier to ensure that products are safe.

In brief, the regulations say that no blinds should have a loose cord or chain in rooms and buildings where children aged between 0-42 months have access. This means that any blinds produced after February 2014 will be registered as child safe.

But do you know that you can go further by adding additional safety features such as:

  • Cleats – These are small fittings that you can mount to your wall, allowing you to wind up any excess cord that isn’t needed. The cleats help you to remove dangling cords, but you’re still advised to keep them well out of reach of children
  • Chain Tensioners – If your blind has a looped chain, such as a roller blind, make it safer by installing a tensioning device. This allows your cords or chains to be held taut in place by the device.
  • Tie On & Safety Washers – They tie to the lifting cords to prevent loops from being created lower down on blinds.

So now that the safety side is taken care of, let’s discuss how to get a perfect night’s sleep.

Room Darkening Blinds

Every parent knows that parenthood and sleep deprivation go hand in hand, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t take some smart steps to try and sneak in a little extra sleep wherever you can.

Darkening the bedroom with a decent set of blinds might be all that’s needed to start basking in the 7:30 lie-in as opposed to the dreaded 6 am start (5 am when those clocks change!)

Room darkening blinds completely block out any natural and artificial light, creating a calm and tranquil space for bedtime. Most of our blinds at Just Blinds, such as roller, cellular, and roman, are available in blackout fabrics or linings to completely darken your child’s rooms.

What Style Of Blind?

When you’re looking at children’s bedroom blinds, you’ll probably want to choose blinds that aren’t too heavy, are easy to clean, and are durable. Roller shades and cellular shades are always popular choices, and roman shades add an elegant, softer touch.

Roller Blinds

Made-to-measure roller blinds are a popular choice for children’s rooms because they are practical, hard-wearing and affordable. They are versatile too, coming in a wide range of colours and patterns. Choosing a black-out roller shade is ideal if you want to control excess light.

Cellular Blinds

Cellular blinds are made from a fabric constructed in a honeycomb structure to give rooms extra insulation and (most importantly) privacy. They also come in a wide range, from light-filtering to blackout styles. This means that you don’t have to forgo natural daylight in exchange for extra privacy.

Cellular blinds are also proven to be great at temperature control to keep rooms cool in the summer and warmer during the winter, making them ideal for saving money on your heating bills.

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are a great alternative to curtains. They are the same width as the mechanism, resulting in far fewer gaps than other blind types.

Because they tend to be made from thicker fabrics than most other styles of blind, they provide a good insulating layer to your windows. This will help to keep your child’s room warm in the winter and stop the room from heating up in the summer months.

Cordless Blinds

Cordless blinds are proven to be far safer than traditional blinds. And as well as being safer, they are extremely easy to use due to allowing you complete hands-free control over them. Making them a great choice for children’s bedroom blinds.

With motorised blinds, there are no awkward cords or pulleys that could potentially tangle or malfunction. And you won’t need to struggle climbing over the furniture or the kids’ toys whenever you need to open or shut them.

These blinds are controlled through your phone, tablet or smart device like Alexa, and you can set a timer for when you want the blinds to open/close to help your child know when it’s nighttime or daytime.
